How ReturnShield's API works and how to read its synthetic case data: what comes in, what the engine stores, and why each case was routed the way it was.
All data here is mock-up data. The merchant DemoStore (M-DEMO), its customers, orders, emails, addresses, card fingerprints and carrier records are fixtures. No real shop is connected and no money moves.
Quick start
# 1. List the demo cases
curl -s https://returnshield.enthernetservice.com/api/cases/M-DEMO
# 2. Read one in full: risk factors, evidence and audit trail
curl -s https://returnshield.enthernetservice.com/api/cases/M-DEMO/<case id from step 1>
# 3. Watch an unsigned webhook get turned away
curl -s -X POST -H "Content-Type: application/json" -d '{"order_id":"o-r5"}' https://returnshield.enthernetservice.com/webhooks/shopify/M-DEMO
# → {"error": "invalid shopify signature"}Try it

400 | {"error": "bad payload: …"}: a required field is missing or not a number |
Signature: base64(HMAC-SHA256(secret, raw_body)), checked before anything else. Body fields: order_id, customer_id, reason_code (NOT_RECEIVED, DAMAGED, NOT_AS_DESCRIBED, CHANGED_MIND, OTHER), reason_text (stored, never interpreted), amount, requested_at. POST only, max 256 KB.
The demo merchant's signing secret is private on this server, so you can see an unsigned request get rejected (try it below) but not create cases yourself. The two demo cases are created by the same pipeline at start-up.

Case fields
risk_score | 0–100, the sum of the fired rules' contributions, capped at 100 |
risk_level | LOW under 30, MEDIUM 30–59, HIGH 60 and above |
route | ESCALATE (high), MANUAL_REVIEW (medium, or low when auto-processing is off), AUTO_PROCESS (low risk, merchant opted in, at most 100, no free-text to interpret) |
status | ESCALATED, IN_REVIEW or AUTO_APPROVED, then whatever a human decides |
identity_key | The resolved identity that links accounts (here the normalised email) |
reason_text | Exactly what the customer wrote. Stored as evidence, never followed as instructions |
Risk rules & routing
Every point is explained and cites evidence. Weights and thresholds are merchant settings (defaults shown); there are no hidden model weights.
| Rule | Points | Fires when |
|---|---|---|
HIGH_RETURN_RATE | +18 | Returns ÷ orders on the linked identity above 40% |
RETURN_VELOCITY | +20 | More than 2 return or refund requests in 30 days |
REPEATED_HIGH_VALUE_REFUNDS | +16 | 2 or more returns of 300 or more |
PRIOR_CHARGEBACKS | +18 (+9 for 2 or more) | Chargebacks on the linked identity |
DELIVERY_CONFLICT | +22 | Claimed NOT_RECEIVED but the carrier shows DELIVERED |
LINKED_IDENTITIES | +15 | Several customer accounts linked by email, address or card fingerprint |
OUTSIDE_RETURN_WINDOW | +10 | Requested more than 30 days after the order |
Refunds need an authorization record from a human with the right role, and every step is appended to a hash-chained audit log.
